FORWARD Call for Papers
SPRING ISSUE THEME: 'PROCESS'
FORWARD and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Associates Committee (NAC) invites article submissions for FORWARD, the Architecture and Design Journal of the National Associates Committee. FORWARD, the bi-annual design journal of the National Associates Committee, is distributed to AIA leadership, 85,000+ members, non-members and educators. The journal is a research-based publication that presents articles from the perspective of the designer or artist. We also strive to extend our focus beyond architecture towards multidisciplinary discussions incorporating art and technology.
FORWARD EDITORIAL BOARD
SPRING ISSUE THEME: 'PROCESS' CALL FOR PAPERS
FORWARD 112 will explore the design process. Designers often look outside our own profession to technology, literature, culture, science and engineering to find inspiration. We invent, innovate, and challenge the status quo. In this issue of Forward we would like to understand the possibilities for discovery. We will explore how designers balance intuitive inspiration and rational analysis, how we recognize patterns and points of connection. FORWARD 112 will include architectural, artistic, and scientific discussions as well as historical and critical analyses. Topics can consider scales from environmental explorations, urban approaches, buildings, façades, and details. Project-specific discussions should bridge the practical and abstract by describing the conceptual framework and how it translates into a project’s planning, form and details. Research, as well as artistic and scientific discussions may move between a variety of discourses including contemporary art, journalism, history, economics, politics and culture.
Please email a final article to the FORWARD Senior Director and FORWARD Director. Please attach a resume or curriculum vitae and Include images. Submit your article as a text document in MS Word (.doc) format and related images in .tiff or .jpg format.
Forward requires that all authors provide their own line-edits. Authors are also responsible for proper documentation of citations and research as endnotes. All images permissions are the responsibility of the author.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF TEXT ARTICLES
Forward encourages researchers, designers, artists and scientists to discuss their scholarly research. Articles focused on research should have a strong, original thesis related to the issue theme. We encourage multidisciplinary discussion and collaboration and actively seek broad perspectives from those outside the architecture profession. Text documents should be in MS Word (.doc) format, images in .tiff or .jpg format.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF DESIGN WORK
FORWARD encourages design professionals to discuss their recently awarded, in progress or completed projects. Articles focused on design work should discuss your design intent and how this translates into the final project. Please describe the conceptual ideas, development process, project intent and project type or program. Also include edited documentation of plans, sections and relevant conceptual sketches, diagrams, model photos and construction photos. The materials should represent the conceptual intent of the project rather than an exhaustive representation. Text documents should be in MS Word (.doc) format, images in .tiff or .jpg format.
In addition, submitting authors will have the opportunity to be selected as part of the FORWARD Peer Review process. Appointments will be made based on the quality of an author’s submission and alignment with FORWARD’s journalistic objectives.
FORWARD welcomes the submission of essays, projects and responses to articles. All FORWARD issues are themed, so articles and projects are selected relative to the issue’s specific subject. Please contact the FORWARD Director, Olivia Graf Doyle, if you have any questions about the direction of your article.
Please send your final documentation to:
Olivia Graf Doyle, Director: email@example.com
Christina Noble, Senior Director: firstname.lastname@example.org
Deadline: Monday, April 30th, 2012
If you anticipate any difficulties meeting this deadline, please contact Ms. Graf Doyle as soon as possible. Articles will be selected through a peer-review process followed by an editorial review by the FORWARD Director, FORWARD Associate Directors, FORWARD Advisory Board, and AIA Staff.
