futureMerton, in its role as Merton Council’s strategic planning and regeneration team, plan to commission a masterplan in 2015 to guide investment and manage growth for the next 15 years, considering the potential of Crossrail 2 as a catalyst for growth.
This competition is a pre-cursor to that masterplan.
Challenging ideas are often overlooked in the process of formal masterplanning. Rising stars often do not get a look-in and the community can sometimes feel side-tracked by the formality of the planning process.
This competition is an opportunity to share ideas for Wimbledon that will inform future plans. It is an opportunity to showcase emerging talent and for the community to share aspirations at the earliest stage.
The purpose of this competition is to pose the questions:
- What could Wimbledon Town Centre be like in 2030?
- How do we get there?
- How could Wimbledon respond to changing economies and demographics?
We wish to:
- Encourage rising stars in the built environment professions to contribute innovative ideas and to benefit by being appointed as design champion(s) to Love Wimbledon BID and futureMerton for the masterplanning process.
- Encourage local people, businesses and creative thinkers everywhere to contribute to the debate.
- Competitors may choose to draw a masterplan for the town centre as a whole, choose part of it or a single building or space. Entries could be in the form of sketch ideas or more detailed ideas which can address one, or as many issues as applicants feel like considering.
We are just as interested in big ideas and overarching proposals as we are by smaller more intimate responses to individual aspects of Wimbledon.
Applicants are encouraged to play to their creative strengths in their entry. A poem, a song, a sketch or an abstract painting that encapsulates a vision is just as interesting a response as a scale plan, architectural renders or a 3D animation.
