The new Global Schindler Award student competition asks for outstanding concepts for new urban forms related to mobility, in response to global urban change. In a rapidly urbanizing world with limited precedents, there is an urgent need to address questions of accessibility, equality and sustainability through design.
The Global Schindler Award competition is open worldwide to students of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning. The competition will begin with the launch of a newsletter and knowledge platform in May 2014, featuring articles and interviews about themes and issues related to the competition. The brief for the competition will be released in August 2014, with entries due in January 2015. With $150,000 USD in prizes and an international jury of experts, the GSA will award excellence and innovation.
The inaugural Global Schindler Award competition site is in Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta in China. Shenzhen is an important border city between Mainland China and Hong Kong – and between China and the world. Shenzhen has undergone explosive urbanization, growing from a fishing village into a sprawling metropolis of over 10 million. Mobility is a catalyst and a conduit for globalization and urbanization and the GSA will ask students to consider this in the context of Shenzhen’s position in the Pearl River Delta. Mobility systems move people, goods and ideas over road and rail, sea and air – and through neighborhoods, regions and the world.
The Global Schindler Award is a partnership between the global mobility provider Schindler Group and the ETH Zurich along with its Future Cities Laboratory (FCL), led by Prof. Kees Christiaanse. The knowledge base of the ETH, the innovation of the FCL and the expertise of Schindler come together in the Global Schindler Award.
