Of a Single-Family Residence near Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonia in New York
Call for submissions for Imagine Hillandale: a charrette that seeks to energize thinking about the use of a unique suburban site for a single-family residence located in the Village of Rye Brook, in Westchester County, New York.
The site, located in a single-family residential zone, comprises approximately 2 acres. It is technically a flag lot, secluded from a residential street, and is bordered on all sides by residential properties, mostly with wooded buffers. The charrette posits a large building envelope, although a substantial portion of the site itself is wooded, and features some steep slopes and rock outcroppings. The site is traversed at its lowest elevation by a stream with a small pond, island, and decorative garden bridge. As a whole, the terrain resembles that of Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Usonia” development site, which is located less than 10 miles away, and while modernist design is not a requirement, responsiveness to the site's unique characteristics will be a primary factor in the evaluation of entries for both redevelopment of the existing residence and for replacement concepts.
The site is currently developed with a 3,300 ft² center-hall colonial house, expanded from the original 1923 construction. There is an attached two-car garage, a gazebo at the rear on a rock outcropping overlooking the stream and principal wooded area, and an in-ground pool.
It is anticipated that successful entries will help to initiate creative thinking about the utilization of the site (and the re-use of existing residence if appropriate) and ideally will support the sale of the property for occupancy and/or redevelopment. Entries should respect a 2.5 story height limit from the existing ground floor datum.
Entry is open to architecture students, graduates, and licensed architects. Portfolios may be submitted by an individual, a group, or a firm; however, no individual may participate in more than one entry or team. The deadline for submission of Conceptual Portfolios is on Sunday, May 4, 2014.
