Should the Soviet past be destroyed to its foundations, to establish in its place the new idols? What will happen to hundreds of small towns, where usually a street of Lenin — is a main street? Really, the most urgent question today is: what’s about the future look of these small cities, riddled with old-fashioned Soviet industry, street names, culture and way of life. Being really tired of pseudo-historical retro-style monuments and official government architectural ensembles we now call for some fresh contemporary ideas. The point of view of the community of intellectuals is really important. Only a widespread program of competitions and debates can help to change lifestyle and look of towns with such kind of a complicated destiny.

What look should the monument to soviet army general receive nowadays? What happens, if some young contemporary figures show interest in the field of this problem, expressing the new points of view on historical figure who, on the one hand, was monumentalized in the name of the city and hundreds of streets names across the territory of the former USSR during the Soviet Era, and on the other hand remains a “dark horse” in military history of Russia. Today’s monuments suffer of the complicated illness of so-called “retro-traditionalism”. Mainstream Modernism is completely unacceptable for the townsfolk, postmodernism is too subjective. The time has come for new, socially responsible ideas, perfect realization of which will, hopefully, show the way for the beginning of a possible “renaissance” of small town.
Chernyakhovsk (former German Insterburg) will remain Russian small town Chernyakhovsk forever, lying in the territory of annexed by USSR former East Prussia (now Kaliningrad Oblast’). So, what the name of this city tells to the residents nowadays? What this name will incorporate in the future, 20 years later, for example? In order not to make this city name fall into deep oblivion, it is important to start the complete renovation of it today.

City Chernyakhovsk named in memory of Ivan Danilovich Chernyakhovsky (1906-1945) — panzer army Commander-in-chief, who died under mysterious circumstances during final WWII operations in East Prussia. Ivan Chernyakhovsky also remains in history as a bright candidate for military career promotion from 1930-s. His name is surrounded by legends, his biography, fortunately, has not survived the process of  inclusion into cheap slang and funny stories. “Positive figure” of the so-called “Stalin Era”: a commander? He was popular among his soldiers, a brave warrior — his tanks drove the Germans in the Baltic lands in the early days of the WWII. Ivan Chernyakhovsky — a tank attack specialist, the proud liberator of Russian cities, was killed two weeks before receiving his brand-new marshal's shoulder boards. I. D. Chernyakhovsky memorial grave in Vilnius was abolished in 1991, the ashes taken to Moscow, and the Vilnius monument was extremely fast moved by the Russian mi
 litary forces to Voronezh.

Должно ли советское прошлое быть разрушено до основания, чтобы установить на его месте новых идолов? Что произойдет с сотнями городов, где главная улица — это улица Ленина? Но самый актуальный вопрос: какой облик нужен сейчас малым городам, пронизанным советской промышленностью, топонимикой, культурой, бытом. В данном случае не подойдет ни политика laissez-faire, ни псевдопатриотические сооружения, видом монументальных госансамблей уродующих площади городов по поводам юбилейных торжеств. Наиболее важным в решении такого вопроса представляется мнение сознательной интеллектуальной общины. Только широкой, повсеместной программой конкурсов и дискуссий можно повлиять на ход формирования городов с такой сложной судьбой, с проблемным будущим.

Монумент советскому генералу, — каким он может быть сегодня, если его сделает не Церетели? Что получится, если молодые современные деятели проявят интерес к этому сюжету, выразят мнение о персонаже, который, с одной стороны, уже перешёл в топонимику, а с другой — остается «темной лошадкой». Сегодняшние памятники страдают ретро-традиционализмом, модернизм не нравится обывателям, постмодернизм слишком субъективен. Наступает время новых, социально ответственных решений: удачное исполнение станет началом возрождения целого города.

Черняховск (бывший немецкий Инстербург) навсегда останется российским Черняховском в составе аннексированной территории Калининградской области, но что говорит это имя жителю города сейчас? Что оно будет говорить через 20 лет? Чтобы не провалить в небытие самое название, то, с чего начинается город, необходимо провести реновацию этого имени.

Город Черняховск носит имя Ивана Даниловича Черняховского (1906-1945) — танкового генерала, погибшего при загадочных обстоятельствах в дни операций в Восточной Пруссии. Фигура И. Д. Черняховского — пример военного выдвиженца 1930-х гг. Его имя окружено легендами, а биография, к счастью, не обросла вульгаризмами и пафосом. Позитивное лицо сталинской эпохи: любимец солдат, смелый воин — его танки гнали немцев в Прибалтике в первые дни войны. Мастер танковой атаки, освободитель русских городов, погиб за две недели до маршальских погон. Его могила в Вильнюсе была ликвидирована в 1991, прах перевезен в Москву, а памятник, русскими военными, контрабандой в Воронеж.
