An Open Call for Visual Artists & Designers to Imagine New York City 25 Years In the Future
A project of Curate NYC
Free and exclusive to NYC -based creators.
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: OCTOBER 1, 2013
Accepting Entries at http://www.curatenyc.org/2013/about-nyc25
New York City has always been the hub of transformation, a bustling center of media, commerce, art and ideas. What will the future bring?
Our great metropolis is a place of critical history and experimentation, where much in society is decided or defined. Today we’re the center of the universe, a place where inconceivable things happen first. Will that always be so? Twenty-five years from now, what impact will New York City have on the world, and vice-versa?
NYC25 is an open call to visual artists and designers across the five boroughs to submit an original artwork that imagines New York City 25 years from now. An expert panel will review all entries, and the top 25 works will be exhibited at Westwood Gallery NYC. The winning artist will receive a $2,500 award, and all entries will be displayed at CurateNYC.org.
In 25 years, 2038 will mark the 100th Anniversary of a wide range of events, including the birth of the minimum wage; the New England Hurricane; the first published appearance of Superman; the LouisSchmeling rematch; Orson Welles' radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds; Kristallnacht. In what kind of city will those remembrances occur? What will be New York City’s cultural, political, economic, or environmental landscape? What aspects of the city’s character will be the most important, and why?
Or imagine surveying the world 25 years ago, in 1988, and trying to picture our lives today.
Twenty-five years ago, Google, Facebook, and Twitter didn’t exist. Apple was adrift without Steve Jobs. The Netherlands became the second country to join the Internet. An analog cell phone cost thousands of dollars, and a tank of regular gas sold at $1.08 a gallon. NASA climate scientist James Hansen introduced the term “global warming” in his testimony to Congress.
From that perspective, what would we have predicted of today’s world? Looking forward, what do you envision of New York City tomorrow?
Accepting entries through October 1, 2013 at http://www.curatenyc.org/2013/about-nyc25.
