Pedestrian Street Canopy

Register/Submit Deadline:  Monday, Mar 28, 20116:59 AMEDT

The challenge is to design a protective canopy for an urban pedestrian street. The goal is to provide an architectural solution that is functional, feasible and elegant. The canopy must protect people from the elements (rain, sun), while promoting good ventilation and daylight levels. Artificial lighting should be integrated into the design. The designer is free to choose a location, but the documentation should clearly explain the chosen location and how the design responds to climate and orientation. Please see the images in the gallery for design precedents.

◦Abstracted urban pedestrian streets.
◦Location: To be determined by designer. Please specify location and orientation.

Objectives

◦Protect pedestrians from the elements (rain, sun).
◦Promote natural ventilation and daylighting.
◦Artificial lighting should be integrated into design
◦Develop a design strategy that can adapt to various site conditions.
◦Design should functional, feasible and elegant.
◦Have fun!

Judges

◦Brady Peters is an architect with substantial experience in research and development in both industry and academia. He is currently a PhD Fellow at the Centre for Information Technology and Architecture (CITA), and an architectural researcher with JJW Arkitekter and with Grontmij/CarlBro Engineers. He was also an Associate Partner with the international architecture practice Foster + Partners, Brady worked on many large architectural projects involving complex geometry and helped to establish the office's rapid prototyping capabilities. He was a key member of the Specialist Modeling Group (SMG), an internal research and development consultancy.
◦David Light is currently employed as the Revit Specialist for HOK London. Focusing on Revit and BIM as well as driving forwards HOK's Building Smart principles. David was also the winner of the first DesignByMany Challenge.
◦Zach Downey is the Director of the Applied Technology Group at SHoP architects in New York City.
◦DesignByMany Community - The top 10 entries based on user votes will be seen by the judges.
