The Avery Review is a journal of critical essays on architecture from the Office of Publications at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). Published monthly, it aims to enrich the digital culture of architecture writing, opening new space for intellectual creativity and spirited criticism. Be it through the juxtaposition of books and buildings, meditations on constructed landscapes, or incisive critiques of architectural showmanship, reviewers test their own convictions through engagement with the work of others. What we are after are essays invigorating to both write and read; pieces that play in the less questioned corners of the discipline.
In the public sphere of the Internet, isn’t everyone a critic? Aren’t we already flooded by opinion? We believe not. Architecture’s digital realm is too often comprised of conventional wisdom, fast-twitch reactions, credulously paraphrased press releases, and a privileging of image over argument. Architecture operates within overlapping frameworks of precedent, adaptation, context, politics, and circumstance, and understanding these interactions is as important as ever. Is there a critical opening between these different models, where we might explore the stakes of academia and practice through thoughtful, informed, and lively reviewing? We believe so.
As we expand the voice and public of architectural criticism, we invite you to join us a reader and contributor. Please send submissions, queries, and comments to [email protected].
