In a globalized and virtual world, the definition of place is no longer established by physical surroundings alone. What before could be statically prescribed by a sensible boundary, a climate, or a settlement is now more mobile and nebulous. The room has become a screen, isolated communities have been inseparably linked into a global network, and physical distance is cleared in a matter of seconds. In a time where an individual can effortlessly inhabit a myriad of places simultaneously, is the sense of place stronger, or is the distinction between places more unclear?
Through examination of a new multi-modal existence, [TRANS-]loci looks to investigate the shifting definitions of place that are both guided, and complicated by, globalization, sustainability, technology, and the changing role of the architect.

With the proliferation of identifiable architectural brands, do we still value regional approaches? Or does constructing the icon mean more to a place?
As the digital realm begins to satisfy more and more consumer and social needs that were once served by the built environment, how is the experience of space and the meaning of place affected?
In a globalized world, does familiarity with a particular environment take on renewed importance? Or does the increasingly accessible global community require a more mobile armature to accommodate a restless wanderlust for new possibilities, knowledge, or culture?
As each member of an increasingly vocal community gains more agency in the process of shaping our environment, who are the new creators of place?
