2010 AIA/LA Home Tour

2010 Fall Home Tour Series reveals treasures hidden in the Hills

One of the luxuries of being an Angelino is enjoying the geographic diversity in the Los Angeles region. From ocean to valley to urban sprawl, Los Angeles offers its population any number of excellent locations to live, work and leisure. Perhaps most representative of the glamorous LA lifestyle is the Hills, bordering the northern part of the city. As a fertile territory for iconic residential architecture (see past modernist case studies) the Hills demonstrate the best in collaborations between classic and contemporary.

“The variations from east to west in the Hills is remarkable,” says Carlo Caccavale, Associate Director for the American Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles Chapter. “This tour will take you through a range of locations, each with their own constraints and each with their own treasures.”

The tour will begin in the Los Feliz Hills, with its small lots and breathtaking views of Hollywood and downtown. Next you will be directed to a home off of Nichols Canyon where you can get a sense of LA Canyon living-quiet, peaceful and secluded. No tour of the Hills would be complete without a sample of glitz and glam living above the Sunset Strip. And finally the tour will take you the historical Trousdale Estate with a smart example of modern contemporary architecture in the form of a guesthouse. The ultra-modern guesthouse stands in juxtaposition to its more traditional counterpart but the complimentary structures confirm the harmony between contemporary architecture and a traditional landscape.

THE HILLS: EAST TO WEST will feature homes by the following architects:

  • Zoltan Pali, FAIA - Studio Pali Fekete architects (SPF:a)
  • Marc Angélil and Sarah Graham, FAIA - agps architecture
  • John Pugliese, Assoc. AIA - Cambia Designs LLC
  • Aleks Istanbullu, AIA - Aleks Istanbullu Architects

To travel the Hills, join us for the 2010 Fall Home Tour, THE HILLS: FROM EAST TO WEST on Sunday, September 19 from 11am-4pm.
