Winner of the 2015 US Dept of Energy Solar Decathlon, The Stevens Institute of Technology's SURE HOUSE is a residential prototype of a truly sustainable and resilient home for the New Jersey shore. This student-designed and -built home uses 90% less energy than a typical New Jersey home through Passive House measures, is flood-proofed using a high-performance plastic and fiber-composite protective shell, and is fully solar powered. These measures combine to create a home which seeks to reduce its contribution to global climate change while also bracing for the effects of rising sea levels and increasingly severe storms. Faculty and student team leaders will present the project in depth - looking at the design process and issues surrounding flood-proof, low energy homes as well as the construction sequence. The team will also offer an in-depth, behind the scenes, look at performance data collected during the 10-day competition in Irvine, CA, including the home's energy generation, energy consumption and interior comfort data. The home's performance will be evaluated re: the predictive PHPP and TRNSYS energy models as well. The team took first place overall in the October 2015 contest, winning first place in an unprecedented 7 individual contests including Architecture, Market Appeal, Engineering, Communications, Commuting, Appliances and Home-Life. Speakers: Ed May, Faculty Project Manager, Stevens Institute SURE HOUSE,; Partner, bldgtyp, llc; CPHC Instructor, Passive House Academy. Chris Hamm, Student Construction Manager, Stevens Institute SURE HOUSE AJ Elliott, Student Electrical Engineer, Stevens Institute SURE HOUSE Christine Hecker, Student Project Engineer, Stevens Institute SURE HOUSE Center for Architecture
