7th annual openhousenewyork weekend

Sunday, Oct 11, 20096:25 AM — Monday, Oct 12, 20096:25 AMEDT

New York City | New York City

openhousenewyork (OHNY) will present the 7th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend, October 10 and 11, 2009, America's largest architecture and design event of its kind. OHNY provides free access to a wide range of spaces in all five boroughs that showcase New York City's rich architectural and design heritage, from the historic to the cutting edge. More than 350 participating sites and programs will offer tours, talks, performances and screenings throughout the weekend. The wide range of sites includes private residences, historic landmarks, architect and artist studios, and new sites that demonstrate sustainable, contemporary design. Among this year's participating sites are tours of the legendary Apollo Theater, recently renovated by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners LLP; the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel—the world's oldest subway tunnel; the newly opened High Line designed by James Corner Field Operations with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and, rising above it, the Standard Hotel by Todd Schliemann of Polshek Partnership Architects; the Thaw Conservation Center at the Morgan Library and Museum; a live-work architectural studio in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn—a contemporary gut renovation of a historic 1899 carriage house; and the Richard Meier and Partners Model Museum, which features models of the architect's celebrated work from his residential houses of the 1960's to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. For more information about OHNY Weekend, including the OHNY Weekend Passport, please visit www.ohny.org. Information about this year's programs will be available on the site beginning October 1, 2009. openhousenewyork (OHNY) is a non-profit organization founded to promote a greater understanding of New York City’s built environment; broaden public awareness by exposing a diverse audience to distinctive examples of architecture, engineering and design; educate and provoke discussion of issues of excellence in design, planning and preservation; and showcase outstanding new work as well as spaces of historic merit. In addition to its signature annual weekend event, OHNY offers workshops and programs for the public throughout the year, as well as educational workshops offered to public and private schools throughout New York City.
