A Plague Remembered: AIDS Memorial Park Design Competition

Tuesday, Mar 27, 201210:31 PM — Wednesday, Apr 11, 201210:31 PMEDT

New York, NY | New York, NY

Founded in 2011, AIDS Memorial Park (AMP) is a coalition of individuals and organizations dedicated to the recognition and preservation of the ongoing history of the AIDS crisis. Although there have been more deaths from AIDS in New York City than total U.S. deaths in the Vietnam War, there is still no significant public memorial dedicated to the epidemic. The coalition's goal is to influence the design of a new park in the West Village to include space to honor New York City’s 100,000+ men, women, and children lost to the disease, and to commemorate and celebrate the efforts of the caregivers and activists who responded heroically to the crisis. To generate inspiring concepts for a memorial park, AMP launched an international design competition in November 2011 sponsored by Architizer and Architectural Record. In just six weeks, 475 proposals were submitted from more than 26 U.S. states and 32 countries on six continents. Center for Architecture
