"Politics of Fabrications Laboratory (PFL) is a research-through-design initiative which explores the changing political implications of material experimentation when applied to the construction of public urban space. This itinerant workshop will visit three Latin-American countries (Chile, Cuba and Mexico) with strong traditions in specific material constructions that will be further explored through digital fabrication techniques. In 2011, the first of PLF Workshop will take place in Ciudad Abierta (Open City) in Valparaiso (Chile), where we will be experimenting with architectural structures in wood. The Ciudad Abierta is an inspiring initiative promoted by a group of artists, poets and architects who looked for an alternative way of living in a vast landscape of dunes facing the ocean. Led by architect Alberto Cruz and poet Godofredo Lommi, the city was founded in 1971 as an open site that included residences for artists and architec ts and the Architecture School of the Catholic University in Valparaiso. Students and residents have built their constructions in the city as a way of linking poetry and space ever since. Long crossings along the territory, poetic acts and collaborative gatherings have been the basis of each construction foundation in this magical city. Ciudad Abierta is still in continuous expansion and configures one of the most intriguing landscapes of experimental architecture in the world." http://valparaiso.aaschool.ac.uk/ http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/STUDY/VISITING/valparaiso.php The 13th of May there will be a Symposium about questions such as Digital Fabrication, Political implication into design of public space & new methods of fabrication. From Felix Candela’s double-curvature concrete shells to Eladio Dieste’s undulated brick surfaces or Alberto Cruz Covarrubias poetic wood constructions, Latin American architecture has demonstrated an outstanding vitality in material expression. However, the work of these architects not only traced new symbolic and expressive architectural trajectories in the history of modern architecture, but also challenged the relationship between architecture and the public in a broader sense. Following this tradition, Politics of Fabrication Symposium (PFS) explores the changing political implications of material experimentation when applied to the construction of public spaces. The symposium brings together academic leaders, practitioners and architectural personalities to open up a conversation on the implications between particular socio-cultural conditions and current digital fabrication techniques. Participants will include Brett Steele (AA), Politics of Fabricaton Laboratory ( AA), Franklin Lee (AA), Mauricio Puentes Riffo (UC Valparaiso), David Jolly Monge(UC Valparaiso), Marcelo Araya (UC Valparaiso), Rodrigo García Alvarado (U Bio Bio), Rodrigo Pérez de Arce (C Santiago), Juan Roman Perez (U Talca), Juan Baixas (Santiago), URO1.org (Santiago) and Solano Benitez (Santiago). The PFS will be held at the Universidad Católica de Valparaiso (Chile) the 13th of May 2011. http://valparaiso.aaschool.ac.uk/?page_id=62
