WHERE: At the Center for Architecture, 536 La Guardia Place, New York WHAT: Synopsis of the event topic - (Re)Orientation: Global Campus Can the Genius Loci travel? And does It want to? Many major universities of today are global entities with footprints in multiple countries. What are the driving forces, goals and outcomes of these efforts; particularly as connections between East and West are formed? What are the advantages of physical (re)location particularly with the availability of distance learning and virtual communication. What are the critical ingredients for the successes of these endeavors and how is success measured? What are the challenges and opportunities of the architect and planner in this multifaceted process? We will be looking at various distinct models including : NYU Shanghai, Education City in Qatar, Asian University for Women, as well as that of the ‘virtual campus’ such as Columbia University’s Studio ‘X’, in a series of short presentations and a moderated panel discussion among architects, educators, planners, and University visionaries. WHO: Speakers and Moderator Jeff Lehman - Vice chancellor and CEO of NYU Shanghai is an American scholar, lawyer and academic administrator who is currently serving as vice chancellor and CEO of startup joint venture New York University Shanghai. Known as an advocate for the role of universities in globalization, he previously served as chancellor and founding dean of the Peking University School of Transnational Law in Shenzhen, China, president of Cornell University, dean of the University of Michigan Law School, and Chair of the Board of Internet2. Mark Wigley - Dean at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation An accomplished scholar and design teacher, Mark Wigley has written extensively on the theory and practice of architecture and is the author of Constant’s New Babylon: The Hyper-Architecture of Desire (1998); White Walls, Designer Dresses: The Fashioning of Modern Architecture (1995); and The Architecture of Deconstruction: Derrida’s Haunt (1993). He co-edited The Activist Drawing: Retracing Situationalist Architectures from Constant’s New Babylon to Beyond (2001). Wigley has served as curator for widely attended exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Drawing Center, New York; Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal; and Witte de With Museum, Rotterdam. He received both his Bachelor of Architecture (1979) and his Ph.D. (1987) from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Jamie von Klemperer FAIA- Principal at KPF Jamie has been responsible for projects of many different programs and scales, from a house to a city. His designs, from the Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics, to the Dongbu Financial Center, to New Songdo City in Korea, have won numerous international design awards and have become important architectural and urban models. He is presently leading the design of One Vanderbilt Place in Manhattan, an iconic office tower designed to strengthen Manhattan’s Midtown Core and the Grand Central District both civically and economically. Jill Lerner FAIA – Principal at KPF - moderator With over 30 years of design and management experience and 18 years with KPF, Jill Lerner has led the design of numerous award-winning academic and institutional research facilities projects for public and private clients throughout the United States and abroad. As a Principal at KPF, she is responsible for all aspects of project management and design, and is the primary client contact during all phases—from initial programming and conceptual design through construction and project close-out. Ms. Lerner leads KPF’s academic, medical and research practice, bringing extensive experience with educational facilities, many of them in dense, urban environments. For the past year, Ms. Lerner served as President of the NYC American Institute of Architects (AIA). She is also an active member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women and was chair of the Building Committee on the board of the Asian University for Women.
