24 architecture designers take the lead. They directly cope with what is most urgent now. They advance where the market still hesitates. The designs on display originate from an ambition to contribute to a sustainable future.

The international travelling exhibition ‘Architecture of Consequence’ presents designs that are the fruits of an ambition to find sustainable designs for the future. The exhibition reveals that a world facing wide-ranging large scale issues can rely on architecture to offer solutions to these problems. The exhibition pairs the issues of our day with today’s design talent, and paints a picture of a proactive design mentality. What sets these designers apart is their vision of society and their integration of radical, innovative ideas into their design practice

Architecture of Consequence does not pose questions: it formulates responses to concerns that involve all of us, from local, regional, national to global level. Concerns that overlap in spatial planning and which are in urgent need of social, economic and cultural alternatives.

Architecture of Consequence articulates the NAI’s long-term mission to arrive at an agenda for architectural responses to today’s pressing social concerns. This innovative agenda challenges urban designers to come up with progressive proposals and ideas, aimed at accomplishing the transition from a reactive to a proactive design practice.

The mission was launched in autumn 2009 with the publication of a book and travelling exhibition which share the title: Architecture of Consequence – Dutch Designs on the future. Both productions constitute a portrait of a proactive design mentality.
