The Center for Architecture / American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY) is pleased to announce that Archtober (ärk'tōbər) is coming! Now in its second year, the city-wide festival of architecture activities, programs, and exhibitions will take place October 1-31, 2012. Archtober’s curated calendar features more than 180 architecture and design lectures, conferences, programs, and exhibitions – a new section this year – happening at the Center for Architecture and collaborating institutions across the city. The popular "Building of the Day" series is reprised for 2012. Architects and other design professionals will lead the free noontime tours, which include contemporary buildings and historic sites, a new addition for 2012. A mid-month highlight is an open house at the new Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island. Special programming by the Aperture Foundation and exhibits at Lori Bookstein Fine Art and the Center for Architecture will celebrate the realization of Louis Kahn’s design, which has been 40 years in the making. “New York City is home to nearly 40,000 architects and design professionals, which is the largest pool of design talent in the country,” says Joseph Aliotta, AIA, LEED AP, AIANY 2012 President. “As in its inaugural year, Archtober continues to demonstrate this sector’s powerful economic impact and draws global attention to one New York’s leading exports.” This year’s festival is supported by an exciting new collaboration with Presenting Media Sponsors Dwell and New York Magazine. 150,000 Archtober guides will be inserted in Dwell’s October and New York Magazine’s September 24th issues along with CITY MODERN – a joint publication of the two magazines – growing the Archtober guide’s circulation tenfold. More people than ever before will be inspired by Archtober’s mission to promote design excellence through engaging public programs. Many events are free; individual pricing and ticketing information is available on each organization’s website. Printed guides will be distributed at the Archtober Visitor Lounge at the Center for Architecture and participating institutions during the festival.
