Biophilia means "love of life." Humans have a biological need to experience a daily connection with nature. Yet, today people spend on average 90% of their time indoors. While this new reality challenges this human-nature connection, there is opportunity to invite nature indoors through biophilic design. Research points to the many benefits of creating these connections and helps substantiate the business case for applying it. Daylight and views of nature are correlated with improved learning performance for students, healing times for hospital patients, productivity in office employees and retail sales growth. This application is of particular interest to Glumac. As engineers, we are fascinated by human-nature relationships and strive to continually broaden our understanding of the money-saving impact they can have for our clients’ projects. To share our interest in biophilic design, Glumac is hosting a StraightTalk forum in partnership with nationally acclaimed green building and biophilic design expert, Bill Browning of Terrapin Bright Green, LLC. Joining Bill will be Susan Painter, Ph.D. Senior Planner and Research Studio Director at AC Martin (for the Seattle and LA events), Bert Gregory, Chairman and CEO of Mithūn (for the Seattle event), and Gail Brager Ph.D., Associate Director at the Center for the Built Environment, UC Berkeley (for the San Francisco event).
