CHECK-IN ARCHITECTURE ON DISPLAY AT THE XXIII UIA WORLD CONGRESS
Turin, Oval 30th June – 3rd July 2008
Artistic Direction: Mario Flavio Benini (Metaflow) Scientific Committee: Luca Martinazzoli, Luca Molinari and Andrea Lis-soni
Check-in Architecture is a participatory research project on cities and architecture that uses all the potential of contemporary media. The project, edited by Metaflow (artistic director Mario Flavio Benini, scientific committee Andrea Lissoni, Luca Martinazzoli, Luca Molinari) involves 600 students from 19 European cities, together with the whole creative scene. The aim of the project is to investigate, through the realization and the circulation of 300 videos-documentaries-reportages (“missionsâ€), how architecture affects the creation of imaginaries and the transformation of the urban texture from every point of view: esthetic and artistic, but also social, cultural, sociological and economic.
Check-in Architecture travels, surfs online, is open to confrontation on a blog, writes on a free press, is on air on the european Urban Screens and now makes a fine show at the XXIII UIA World Congress in Turin, until the next meeting at the end of September, at the Venice Biennale.
Check-in Architecture presents at the XXIII UIA World Congress in Turin CHECK-IN ARCHITECTURE SHOWCASE, an exhibition that sees as protagonists three successful authors within the european scenario of audio-visual experimentation and live media: the film-maker Carlos Ca-sas, the audio-visual team Invernomuto and the video artist Claudio Si-natti have dived into the huge amount of audio-visual material produced during Check-in Architecture’s missions in order to reinterpret it and ree-laborate it.
The first two authors have done so through two videos that will be pre-sented by Check-in Architecture on the Oval’s screens, Sinatti through four MAPS of visual interpretations in the shape of Check-in Architecture atlases, which will be printed on a limited edition and distributed during the Congress. The exhibition will also host two areas where images taken from the footage of the various missions will be on display no-stop, and where you will have the opportunity to surf on the project’s web sites.
* Casas’ work is centred on Barcelona, the city that best represents the stereotype of urban transformation in the last twenty years, due to its ability of fully penetrating and interacting with the cul-tural-generational imaginary of the young.
* Invernomuto’s video is a long suite of sequences taken from the materials that were left over from the editing of the missions.
* Claudio Sinatti’s work is a MAP that talks of and represents in a paper edition the whole amount of data (flights, places of the missions, passages on Youtube…) of Check-in Architecture.
The exhibition is completed by two other Check-in Architecture’s scre-ens which broadcast synthesis data of the research journey on urban spaces carried out in cooperation with the Congress, in alternation with images shot during the missions.
