City as Space and State of Mind: New York, 1980-2010

New York in recent years has encouraged new waves of capital investment, immigration and globalization while losing old local identities and, some say, its moral geography. Gentrifiers, bloggers and planners pursue signs of “authenticity” and in this pursuit destroy the city’s soul. Who are the agents of change in these multiple experiences of redevelopment? And how can we protect the forms of authenticity that make New York neighborhoods and public spaces distinctive?
Sharon Zukin is professor of sociology at Brooklyn College and the City University Graduate Center. Her new book, Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places, has just been published by Oxford University Press. Her earlier books on New York are Loft Living and The Cultures of Cities. Zukin won the C. Wright Mills Award for Landscapes of Power: From Detroit to Disney World.
