Not too long ago, Inglewood was the sports capital of Southern California, playing host to the Lakers, the Kings and Hollywood Park racetrack. Over the years, the city lost that stature and fell victim to pop culture stereotypes. Formerly known as the City of Champions, today Inglewood could be reconsidered as the “Comeback Champ” of cities. Building on the success of the Design Hooky Tours last year, LA Design Festival is hosting two City Design Tours this year, including one tour that explores Inglewood's most interesting design studios and features the City's most interesting design characters. Each tour explores three to four locations, and ends at a local watering hole. Featured stops on the tour include: (fer) Studio (http://ferstudio.com/) (fer) studio has been designing meaningful and memorable urban spaces for over ten years. Christopher Mercier and Doug Pierson have built their studio’s practice to reflect the community they are located in and which they serve. Most recently, the design firm made waves when it was announced that they would collaborate with Frank Gehry as executive architects on a new campus for Children’s Institute, helping to jumpstart development in downtown Watts. (fer) studio’s enviable slate of projects includes Connie and Ted’s, Smashbox Studios, Father’s Office in Culver City, Spare Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and countless modern residences. (fer) studio was also involved in re-envisioning Market Street in Inglewood, and recently created Bookmark, an installation for the Inglewood Public Library. Kali Nikitas & Rich Shelton Residence (http://www.kalinikitas.com/) A few years ago, Kali Nikitas was consumed by the need to buy a house, but finding one in her price range in Santa Monica, where she and her husband were renting an apartment at the time, was impossible. On one of these late night obsessive hunts, she went to Craigslist and happened upon her absolute dream house: a 1939 original Rudolf Schindler on a tree-lined street in North Inglewood. Despite not being familiar with the community, Kali and Rich visited the house and within a week they were in escrow. The two bedroom light-filled home is perfectly proportioned with walls of glass, a mature succulent garden, and original casework. Sitting in the living room, one truly experiences what Schindler called “space architecture,” his own special form of modern architecture that denounced ornament and focused on the design of interior space. Schindler designed around 500 projects of which about 150 were built. These were largely single-family houses, although there were some apartments, small commercial buildings and a single church. Kali and Rich’s lovingly restored Schindler is one of Inglewood’s best-kept secrets, though the LA Times beat us to it a few years ago. Onna Ehrlich Studio (https://onnaehrlich.com/) Nigerian-born designer and Art Center graduate Onna Ehrlich has built a long list of celebrity clients over the past ten years, including Halle Berry, Cameron Diaz, Mila Kunis, and Rose Byrne. Her bespoke handbags are paraded on the runways and on the arms of countless fashion bloggers in New York, London, and Los Angeles. Ehrlich spoke last year on a panel with her father, architect Stephen Ehrlich and KCRW Design and Architecture host Frances Anderton. This year, she opens up her Inglewood studio and design atelier which she shares with husband, industrial designer Joel Bell. Stop by to meet this dynamic design duo in their element and stay to shop a special studio sale. Three Weavers Brewing Company (http://www.threeweavers.la/) Three Weavers set up shop in Inglewood just eight short months ago. Co-founded by Lynne Weaver and Alexandra Nowell, this emerging craft brewery prides itself on producing traditional style of beer with the highest quality local and regional ingredients. Since opening last November, Three Weavers has been making headlines, particularly since Nowell stands out as the only female Master Brewer in California at the tender age of 30. Beer, as it happens, saved her from becoming an attorney. Weaver is the mother of three, and a former financial advisor who has found new meaning in hops. The City Design Tour ends with happy hour on the terrace at Three Weavers’ tasting room, located in an industrial park in Inglewood. Learn more about this dynamic duo here. TICKETS Purchase tickets online here: http://ladesignfestival.ticketmob.com/event.cfm?cart&id=100076 TRANSPORTATION Tour stops are approximately 1 mile apart. The route is bikeable.
