Fold forming was invented by Canadian jeweler Charles Lewton-Brain as a new process for forming metal, and the technique has spread among jewelers and fine metal artisans worldwide. Students fly in from as far away as Hong Kong and Australia to take this workshop with Charles in his Calgary studio. The Center for Metal Arts offers a one-day introduction to fold forming for an enjoyable day in the studio.

Fold forming uses metal’s plasticity and ductility to make complex forms resembling chased, constructed and soldered shapes from single sheets of metal. Radical changes in cross section are possible in as little as 3-5 minutes.

In this workshop, we will work hands-on with the torch, hammer and anvil to learn a series of fold-forming techniques in copper. The results are quick and gratifying, and lead readily to new design ideas in jewelry, mixed media, or just fun objects for the home or garden. This workshop is a great choice for experimenting with new design ideas, for jumpstarting creativity, or for an enjoyable balance to the work week.

The class will be held Saturday, September 11 from 10 AM to 2:30 PM at the Center for Metal Arts, 44 Jayne St. Florida NY 10921. Cost is $80 plus a $15 material fee.
