Exhibition curated by Eszter Steierhoffer, Curator, Contemporary Architecture, CCA Álvaro Siza’s contributions to The SAAL Process: Housing in Portugal 1974-1976 (on view in the CCA main galleries through October 4, 2015) led to commissions for social housing in Berlin and The Hague in the early 1980s. Known as “Bonjour Tristesse” and “Punt en Komma”, they are his first built projects outside of Portugal and incorporate considerations he explored earlier in Porto, approaching housing on the scale of the neighborhood and within the context of a historic city. While the two projects were conceived at the same time and share similarities in scale and program, Siza arrived at very distinct solutions. In this sense the two projects reflect Siza’s ability to combine his personal vision with a local character – the buildings assume a different tone through particular architectural elements that engage their respective neighborhood. The exhibition includes two large-scale models that help placing the buildings within their urban context, as well as photography by Giovanni Chiaramonte, Alessandra Chemollo and Peter de Ruig, and original drawings from the archive of the architect. Siza donated a large part of his office archive to the CCA in 2014 in order to foster discussion and dialogue in a research-oriented context. More info at www.cca.qc.ca.
