Current Work: Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects

Tokyo-based architect, Toyo Ito of Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, explores the dynamic relationships and boundaries between buildings and their environments. Among his best-known buildings in Japan are the Yatsushiro Municipal Museum, Kumamoto (1991); Dome in Odate, Akita (1997); Sendai Médiathèque, Miyagi (2001); Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre, Nagano (2004); TOD's Ometesando Building, Tokyo (2004); the Meiso no Mori Municipal Funeral Hall, Gifu (2006); and the Tama Art University Library (Hachioji campus), Tokyo (2007). International projects include the Brugge Pavilion, Bruges, Belgium (2002); Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, London (2002); Hospital Cognacq-Jay, Paris (2006); and VivoCity, Singapore (2006). Under development or in construction are Relaxation Park, Torrevieja, Spain; the Main Stadium for the 2009 World Games, Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Taichung Metropolitan Opera House, Taichung, Taiwan; College of Social Sciences, National Taiwan University, Taipei; and Mr. Ito’s first project in the United States, the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Born in 1941, Mr. Ito is the recipient of many awards, including the Austrian Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts, in 2008; the prestigious Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects, in 2006; the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, presented in 2002 at the Venice Biennale’s 8th International Architecture Exhibition, “NEXT”; and the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, in 2000. In 1971, he founded the firm Urban Robot, which was renamed Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, in 1979. Following the lecture, Messrs Ito and Rinder will discuss the plans and details of the architect’s first American project. Tickets are required for admission to League programs.
