“Design Education as Research Laboratory” 10 Years Architecture Education at DIA Conference 7 - 8 July 2009 guests should register for Conference: [email protected] With the completion of a first cycle of ten years, the graduate architecture program of DIA (Dessau Institute of Architecture) is hosting an international colloquium on the potential and implications of graduate architectural education viewed as a laboratory for design research. DIA views this colloquium as a medium for reviewing a decade of its own achievements as well a critical vehicle for an exchange of perspectives on advanced architectural and design education in general and upon graduate design education in particular. The colloquium will focus upon pedagogical models which emphasize experimental design and approaches to research-oriented activity as new foundations for design education. Diverse interpretations of the idea of the design laboratory as an alternative to the design studio will be critically presented and the components of such models will be introduced. The colloquium will be organized in two day-long sessions. The first day will be related to existing models of the idea of design education as a research laboratory. Seven international case studies represented by schools noted for their pedagogical experimentation, will display their advanced degree programs, and their on-going contributions to the discourse of the relationship between critical education and critical practice. The second day will be devoted to presenting and discussing the components of contemporary approaches to critical education, particularly at the level of graduate programs. Each session will be concluded by a panel discussion which will provide a forum for interaction between the speakers and the audience. The conference sessions will be the subject of a publication: “Design Education as Research Laboratory “ which will be edited by Professors Robert Oxman and Alfred Jacoby. IV. DIA betrachtet diese Konferenz einerseits als Medium für den Rückblick auf eine Dekade des Erreichten und andererseits als kritisches Vehikel des Austauschs von Perspektiven zur fortschrittlichen Architektur- und Design Ausbildung im Allgemeinen und der Graduierten - (Master) Ausbildung im Sinne eines Forschungslabors im Speziellen. Die Konferenz wird sich auf folgende Aspekte der Ausbildung konzentrieren: I. Modelle Dabei geht es um die Präsentation und Diskussion pädagogischer Modelle, die sich mit experimentellem Design auseinandersetzen sowie solche, die forschungs-orientierte Aktivitäten als neue Grundlage für die Design Ausbildung zum Ziel haben. II. Components/Bestandteile Hier geht es um die Vorstellung und Diskussion verschiedener Interpretationen der Idee des Designlabors als alternative zum Design Studio. Wesentliche Bestandteile (Components) solcher Modelle sollen vorgestellt werden. III. Ablauf Die Konferenz dauert zwei Tage: Der erste Tag soll am Bauhaus stattfinden, der zweite Konferenztag im Gebäude 08, in der Hochschule Anhalt. Tag 1 Dieser wird sich mit bestehenden Modellen der Design Ausbildung als Forschungs-labor beschäftigen. Verschiedene Schulen, die für ihre fortschrittliche Ausbildung bekannt sind, werden ihre Master Programme als Internationale Fallstudien vorstellen. Dabei sollen dieständigen Beiträge dieser Institutionen zur Debatte über das Verhältnis zwischen kritischer Ausbildung und kritischer Praxis im Vordergrund stehen. Tag 2 Der zweite Konferenztag wird sich mit der Präsentation und Diskussion der Components/Bestandteile von zeitgemäßer und kritischer Ausbildung im speziellen auf der Ebene der Masterausbildung (Graduate Programs) befassen. Jeder einzelne Tag hat zwei thematische Abschnitte (Sessions). Diese werden durch eine Panel-Diskussion abgerundet. Diese dienen als Forum zwischen Konferenzteilnehmern und den Vortragenden. Sie werden von Kollegen der Hochschule Anhalt als Moderatoren sowie von weiteren Diskutanten gestaltet. Die Konferenz-Sessions werden nach dem Ende der Tagung als : “Design Education as Research Laboratory “ veröffentlicht. Diese Publikation wird von Prof. Robert Oxman und Prof. Alfred Jacoby editiert ____________________________ on DIA Dessau: www.dia-architecture.de The Dessau Institute of Architecture is conducting a 2 year Master of Architecture Course as a Graduate School which is taught entirely in English, leading to an internationally accredited M.Arch. Degree. Starting with 10 students in 1999 this oriented course has by now expanded to over 80 students from more than 30 countries Today it is the most successful English-taught Master of Architecture Course in Germany. It has the highest number of scholarship awards from the German Academic Exchange Program DAAD and many of its alumni work in internationally renowned offices around the world such as Foster and Partners, Zaha Hadid, Future Systems,Eva Jiricna (all London) or Rafael Vinoly in New York. Some of its students have won prizes in coveted Architecture competitons like FEIDAD or the German DAAD Prize. One student (Jovan Ivanovski, Macedonia ), was invited to participate in his country's effort at the Venice Biennale 2008 As a School of Architecture, DIA took part in the 2006 and 2008 Bejing Architecture Biennale for young talents as the only participant from Germany. As basis for this success, its Director Prof .Alfred Jacoby sees the successful integration of such a large international student body at the famous Gropius Bauhaus location, the multitude of academic options offered in the course as well as the strong emphasis in teaching with digital media and the intelligent architectonic and technical handling of them. At DIA there are predominantly teachers from the Anhalt University. However it is common practice to invite an international teaching staff as guests both for a stay as Guest Professors for 1-2 years as well as for Crits and other events. Over the past six years DIA has had both Neil Leach (USC, Los Angeles) and Christos Passas from the AA in London as distinguished DAAD Guest Chairs. In addition, there is a long list of international complementary teaching staff. DIA is an affiliate member of the American Collegiate Association of Architecture Schools (ACSA) and has many exchange partners around the globe. It conducts studios and summer courses that tackle European but also global issues. It encourages students to look at urban, technical as well as environmental problems with the aim of searching for sustainable proposals as solutions. To study at DIA is certailnly an exciting and academically challenging experience for any student that is looking for a sound education at Master level. Prof. Alfred Jacoby Director DIA Das Dessau Institute of Architecture (DIA)(als ein Teil der Hochschule Anhalt) veranstaltet zu seinem 10 jährigen Jubiläum ihres Master of Architecture Programms zusammen mit dem Fachbereich für Architektur, Facilty Management und Vermessungswesen am 07. und 08. Juli 2009 eine Konferenz zum Thema: "Design Education as Research Laboratory." Zu diesem Event am Bauhaus in Dessau kommen Direktoren und Dekane aus 14 verschiedenen Hochschulen weltweit, so aus den USA die Universitäten Harvard und Yale, die Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, die Rice University in Houston und die Columbia University New York. Aus England kommen die Direktoren der Bartlett School und der Architecture Association (beide London) der Ecole Speciale d'Architecture aus Paris, sowie der TU Delft und dem Berlage Institut Rotterdam aus Holland. Deutschsprachige Hochschulen sind mit der HfG Offenbach,der Stiftung Bauhaus und der Universität fuer Angewandte Kunst in Wien vertreten. Das DIA hat 1999 mit seinem englischsprachigen Master of Architecture Kurs begonnen Zunächst waren 10 Studierenden eingeschrieben. Heute kommen 90 Studenten aus 25 Ländern an diesen historischen Studienort nach Dessau. Somit ist dieser Master Studiengang mit seinem Inhaltsschwerpunkt " From Bauhaus to Baustadt" der zahlenmäßig stärkste in Deutschland. DIA hat die großte Anzahl von ausländischen DAAD Stipendiaten und viele seiner Absolventen arbeiten heute in anerkannten Architekturbüros oder in öffentlichen Ämtern weltweit. Mit dieser Konferenz nutz das DIA die Chance seinen eigenen Werdegang zu ueberdenken und dabei in eine internationale Plattform zur Diskussion heutiger Graduate Education zu bieten.
