ECOWEEK conferences and workshops across Europe inspire and empower young architects to be active designers for the benefit of their communities. Since 2005 ECOWEEK has hosted keynote lectures by leaders and leading professionals such as Al Gore, award-winning architects Shigeru Ban, Ken Yeang, Bjarke Ingels, Francis Kere, Francoise-Helene Jourda, Michael Sorkin and landscape architect Julie Bargmann. The ECOWEEK International Conference & Sustainable Design Workshops is scheduled to take place in Thessaloniki, Greece in November 1-7, 2015. Participants to the event, among them young and established architects, landscape architects, designers and architecture students, will be joining from Greece, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Kosovo and Liechtenstein. ECOWEEK participants will spend one week attending lectures and sustainable design workshops assigned real projects in local communities within the city of Thessaloniki. The workshops are led by local & international architects, landscape architects and designers and the themes are focusing on real urban sites in the city – schools, open space, public space, etc. The workshop proposals will be developed presented and made public with the intention of immediate or future implementation. ECOWEEK projects are often adopted by cities and local communities, like in Copenhagen, for example, where the city chose 17 out of 26 ECOWEEK projects, designed during the workshops, to be further developed and implemented. Among ECOWEEK in Thessaloniki partners are the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Graduate Program on Landscape Architecture, AUTH School of Architecture, Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), Dimokritos, the Embassies of Norway and Sweden, the Norwegian Institute at Athens, ADA, Archisearch and CSR in Greece. Distinguished invited speakers and workshop leaders include Einar Jarmund (Norway), Prodromos Nikiforidis and Bernard Cuomo (Greece), Michiel Smits and Gie Steenput (Holland), Natalia Pantelidou (Greece & Denmark), Thomas Kauertz (Germany), Urban Soul Project (Greece), Johannes Peter Steidl (Liechtenstein), Antonis Smertsidis (Greece), Martijn Schildkamp (Holland), Dora Kiriafini (Greece), UbuPlan (Greece) and 40.22 Architects (Greece).
