Results of methane survey of parts of Manhattan on November 27, 2012
In a confluence of climate change science, environmental activism and artistic practice, the exhibit and panel discussion EMISSIONS: Images from the Mixing Layer present the urgent underlying premise that we must be able to not only conceptualize but visualize the reality of climate change. Developed by artists Ruth Hardinger and Rebecca Smith, the presentation draws upon a scientific study of fugitive methane emissions that are blanketing Manhattan. The exhibition includes images from the Gas Safety Inc. study (under the aegis of Damascus Citizens for Sustainability) with works by Colleen Fitzgibbon, Ruth Hardinger, Joe Lewis, Christy Rupp, and Rebecca Smith. The panel will discuss rich and fragile aspects of our precious air and atmosphere and the creative connections between art and science. Participants include Al Appleton, Senior Fellow for Sustainable Entrepreneurship, The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design and former NYC DEP Commissioner; Barbara Arrindell, Artist, Founder and Director of Damascus Citizens for Sustainability;Ruth Hardinger; Bryce Payne, Ph.D., Associate Research Professor Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre PA and Senior Fellow of Wake Forest University CEES, Winston- Salem, NC; Rebecca Smith; and Samara Swanston, Legislative Counsel to the Environmental Protection Committee of the NYC Council. The exhibit and discussion are presented by The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design, The Cooper Union School of Art and Marfa Dialogues/NY. Marfa Dialogues was originally conceived as a symposium to broaden public exploration of the intersection of art, politics and culture. This year’s Marfa Dialogues/NY is made possible by a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Free and open to the public.
