EXTRAFABRICA TAIPEI SUMMER WORKSHOP 2015 Website : www.dezact.org facebook : https://www.facebook.com/dezact twitter : https://twitter.com/dezactnews Introduction EXTRAFABRICA is a 12-day 'in-situ' workshop exploring advanced digital fabrication techniques in direct engagement with urban situations, and in this case, in Taipei City. It has been initiated by DEZACT a specialised architectural design group based in UK, and in collaboration with Shih Chein University based in Taiwan. Technical resources and activities venue have been provided by Shih Chien University, Taiwan. The workshop is accompanied by a series of computational design, digital fabrication, machine DIY workshops and lectures with keynote speakers and round table discussants from UK, USA, Taiwan, China and Span. Workshops and lectures invite participants ranging from students at undergraduate and graduate levels, recent graduates and young creative designers, professional architects and engineers, spatial and media artists, specialists in design and construction industry, to academics and theoreticians. The final jury of the workshop also launches the one-week exhibition which will be an interactive event involves public demonstration of techniques, design and making process and participant-input as part of intelligent feedback and adaptive mechanism in urban situations. Workshop Agenda Increasingly across the past two centuries of mass industrialization and mass digitalization, the engrained opposition between the real and the simulated seemed to have hijacked discourses on the relation between machines and human lives. The realm of the artificial, of things and actions depending on the machinic, was believed to have brought about the rise of the reproducible, the manipulatable and the virtual, and to be blamed for the loss of the real, the corporeal, and the natural. If one can bypass such diametric conclusion heightened at the end of the last century and to dismantle the myth that webcams and photoshop have ruined real images, the industrial have ruined the natural, and eventually robots and drones will replace humans, a new hybrid order can be probed. Experiments in the overlapping realm of the ‘anthropic’ and the ‘machinic’ – manufacturing and fabricating that are at the same time animating and performing, or behavioural and psychological patterns that can be instigated through mechanic learning and prototyping – is radically redefining the ontology of the artificial. Rather than the objectified container of subjective lives, architecture is the new hybrid artifice that acquires an organic and anthropic significance in itself with its own subjectivity; it is now the extension of the anthropo-machinic: animated, sentient and intelligent. In this radical spirit of animating architecture through the anthropo-mechinic, this summer’s EXTRAFABRICA2 2015 extends into experiments on animated and performative possibilities in design and construction processes thats spans from the design studio to urban conditions. A variety of analogue and digital tools, robotics and generative scripting, computational simulation and physical prototyping, and multi-disciplinary methodologies, will be introduced and combined to test duo- or multi-locational spatial experience, in-situ and in-sync interactive fabrication, designer-user and robotic behavioural feedback, multi-medial-physical-virtual interfaces, mobile and participatory design process. EXTRAFABRICA aims to develop and test interactive design and fabrication scenarios in neglected or problematic urban interstices and ecologies, to adapt existing constructs to new use and identity, to catalyse socio-cultural activities and to engage behaviour parallax between physical and virtual environments. Conditions of ‘live’ factors with extended duration and occupation, i.e. street life, derelict buildings, traffic, rain, dance, demonstration, and so on, are invited to interfere with quantifiable or codifiable parameters set out by design algorithm, feedback mechanism and fabrication dynamic. EXTRAFABRICA envisages architectural outcome which enables fabrication of action, of participation, of change of values, of identify, of confluence of voices and dreams. This event is envisaged as part of the wider agenda in establishing Taipei City as the 'World Design Capital 2016': an exemplary model of adaptive, sustainable and visionary urban developmen Target Audience Students, architects, urban planners, designers, artists, and individuals with other backgrounds with an interest to engage in new techniques of design methodologies and technologies of production. Tutor The summer studio will be taught by tutors and graduates from the Architectural Association (UK), UCL Bartlett (UK), Cambridge University (UK) and University of Westminster (UK) and researchers from Harvard University (USA) along with faculty from the host institute Shih Chein University (Taiwan).
