AIANY’s First Day on the Job is an invitation to students and recent graduates to meet and interact with working architects and faculty in a symposium setting. We will engage in topic-driven discussions that will bridge the differences between the academy and the workplace. Conversely, First Day on the Job is an opportunity for professionals to meet architectural talent about to enter the workforce and gain fresh insight into their points of view, concerns, and aspirations. Last year, the program attracted over 75 students, along with 14 professional and faculty moderators and a dozen professionals, who joined in discussions focused around the nine topics presented throughout the day. Based on evaluations of last year’s event, the 2014 program has been enhanced to create powerful ways for emerging talent and established professionals to connect and share experiences. Doing so benefits all participants and the architectural profession. Discussion topics include Women in Architecture, Unpaid Internships, Human Resources, Licensure, Intellectual Property, Mentoring, and Alternate Career Paths. An afternoon portfolio review will facilitate interaction between established professionals and emerging professionals. The inaugural session recently received the AIA New York Chapter’s 2014 Vice President’s Certificate of Excellence for Professional Development that recognizes the initiative, timeliness, and value of the program to those entering the architectural profession. Program The Office The Fundamentals you should know about (and the ones you don’t) Transitioning from academia to work can be a culture shock. Make sure you know your firm expectations regarding hours of work, dress code, who to report to, where to reference office policy and procedures, communicating with colleagues, meetings, phone etiquette, and more before you start. Alternate Career Paths Understand the owner’s side of architecture and being the construction professional Architects have a unique set of skills and perceptions that are valuable outside a traditional architectural career. The need for professionals has diversified into real estate development, social research, publishing, technology, and politics, just to mention a few. Unpaid Internships & Finding Mentors Who, What, When, Where and Why. Is this a fair opportunity? Unpaid internships can be rewarding and successful beyond the pay check, or not. Know the regulatory and professional guidelines for unpaid internships. Human Resources Getting the most from your firm's Firm Culture and Benefits How young interns and architects can negotiate salary, manage benefits and healthcare, and sort out bias issues while working in small, medium, and large firms, with and without Human Resources Departments. Intellectual Property Who Owns Your Great Ideas? Who owns all your unique designs and expressions, you or your employer? Do you even get credit for it? And what about all of that research you had to do to come up with your design: images you presented to the client, photos you pulled off the internet – who owns those? This section will discuss what you can do to protect your own work, and to keep you from taking the work of others. Women in Architecture Making Your Presence Known (so you can create your own job) Women are the majority of students in the field but lag behind in leadership roles. How women are making strides towards firm ownership and other leadership positions. Licensure Watching your Ncarbs: A lean and mean diet towards licensure Licensure is a recognized attribute. Learn why you want to obtain your license early in your career.
