First Friday BIG Join BIG at its office for drinks, informal conversation, and a behind-the-scenes look at recent and upcoming projects. This program is part of First Friday, a monthly opportunity for League members to visit the offices of leading design practices to see work on the boards and learn more about the offices’ organization and design processes. These informal social gatherings feature happy hour drinks arranged by the host office. Founded by Bjarke Ingels in 2005, BIG is a Copenhagen and New York based firm operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research, and development. The firm’s architecture, described in the firm’s own words, is shaped by “careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes…due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows, and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization.” Describing their design process as “a form of programmatic alchemy” created by mixing conventional ingredients, the firm seeks a “fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia.” The firm has garnered significant recognition for their work, including most recently, awards from Architizer, AIA NY and National Merit Honor Awards, and a Global Holcim Award for Sustainable Construction. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. Recent projects in Denmark include the Danish Maritime Museum, Helsingor; The Mountain, Copenhagen; and the Gammel Hellerup Sportshall, Hellerup. Current New York City projects include 2 World Trade Center, VIA at West 57th Street, and The Dryline; other current projects include the Amager Bakke Waste To Energy Plant, Copenhagen; the Audemars Piguet Museum, Basel; and the Smithsonian Institution South Campus Master Plan, Washington D.C.
