This fall, curators from three Los Angeles-based organizations come together as part of World Wide Storefront, a Storefront for Art and Architecture project, to present Host: Natural Histories for Los Angeles. This series of exhibitions and events is a collaboration between Big City Forum, Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design, and the Neutra VDL Research House. We asked LA Forum’s co-president Mimi Zeiger to give us the scoop. What’s Host? We’re part of a global initiative called World Wide Storefront — a curatorial project that networks together teams from all over the States, and from Canada, Greece, Israel, Dominican Republic, and includes an artist residency in a shipping container. Here in LA, the Neutra VDL hosts our project, which takes on the question of what is a “host.” Is it about talk show-like spectacle, the host body for a parasite, or about the domestic life and playing hostess with the mostest? Los Angeles has long been the host city for individual dreams and architectural ideals. How does this play out at the Neutra VDL Research House? The main exhibition piece of the series opens Saturday, October 11 with Wet Horizons, an installation by Medellin architect Luis Callejas / LCLA office in the VDL penthouse. Using curtain-like textile drawings, digital projections, and models the work hopes to articulate environmental connections between Callejas’ practice and the architecture of the house itself. In short, it superimposes distant, perhaps alternative landscapes, on top the pretty classic LA views of Silver Lake. Then, on Sunday, October 12, Wonne Ickx of the Mexico City-based Productora joins Callejas for a conversation over brunch.
