Time: 7:00 pm Admission: Free. Reservations required. Fast-paced PechaKucha format will feature conservation efforts and challenges for The Forum, post-war signs in Burbank, the Schneidman House, and more. Southern California boasts an unparalleled legacy of modern architecture, but these aging structures now present architectural and conservation practitioners with a range of challenges. On December 9 at the Getty Center, Los Angeles-area practitioners will showcase six recent projects, each highlighting a different preservation challenge and building type. The event will be "Powered by PechaKucha," a simple presentation format in which speakers show 20 images, each for 20 seconds, making for a fast-paced and lively evening. Throughout the 20th century, Los Angeles has served as a veritable laboratory for new architectural ideas and forms, from small-scale residential architecture to commercial and monumental civic buildings. The evening will reflect this diversity with presentations about The Forum, Schneidman House, post-war signs in Burbank, Stuart Building, Mission 66 Visitor Center, and Bubeshko Apartments. Topics will include adapting obsolete buildings to modern uses, meeting energy efficiency needs while preserving character-defining features, and sensitively restoring features and finishes that have been lost over time. This event is presented in conjunction with Getty Conservation Institute's Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative.
