This exhibition highlights fourteen artists living and working in Japan. These artists create photographic and video works, many of which have never been viewed by a North American audience. Presented in four distinct themes, this exhibition will provide insight into the current visual culture in Japan. During the past decade, international fascination with the emergence of a powerful generation of Chinese photographic and video artists has served to turn attention away from the concurrent developments taking place in Japan. Heavy Light will explore the many unconventional sensibilities, expansive imaginations, and unpredictable images that characterize recent photo-based art in Japan. Curators: Christopher Phillips, International Center of Photography, New York, and Noriko Fuku. Curator at LACMA: Charlotte Cotton, Photography.
