Hidden ARTifacts: The Architectural Process is a powerful art exhibition, eschewing all literal reference to buildings, and instead celebrating a forgotten body of work: the studies, experiments, models, and personal art of architects. Much more than just an art show, Bergamot Station’s Building Bridges Art Exchange gallery will also house the simultaneous launch of an exciting new experiment in community design education. The gallery will host a series of events including classes, presentations and discussions designed to cater to both professional architects and the public. From advanced software classes and training to generally practical architecture and design education that anyone can benefit from, these events will empower and unite architects and the general public in profound ways. With a series of classes and lectures layered within an art exhibition, Hidden ARTifacts will transcend from a show into an experience. Together these components will draw the curtain on the creative process of the architecturally educated, illustrating in a multitude of ways how architects can be far more than simply facilitators of buildings and permits. By exploring the creative, experimental, and analytic approach of each artist, show creator Jenda Michl guides us to a new appreciation for the design process itself, and illustrates the architect’s role as artist, creator and thinker on a broad scale, thus rebuilding the bridge between architect and Angeleno. Ultimately a fundraiser, all proceeds from Hidden ARTifacts will go toward the permanent establishment of a nerve center for architecture in Los Angeles. This will include a peer-to-peer educational framework, a design dedicated co-working space, and a info/help desk for the general public. Building Bridges Art Exchange is a 501c3 non-profit gallery celebrating its 10th year of importing and showcasing the work of outstanding foreign artists. Hidden ARTifacts will benefit from gallery director Marisa Caichiolo’s co-curation and extensive fine art experience.
