InDeSem 2015: ‘ReCraft’ explores the impact of emerging digital fabrication technologies on the practice of architecture. Through a critical examination of newly available tools, technigues and materials, Re.Craft inquires the notion of craft in contemporary architecture. We live in an era of rapid technological change. With the emergence of interactive environments, adaptive architectures, data-driven design and new manufacturing techniques society is bound to take another drastic step in its evolution, inevitably redefining the role of the architect. The first and second Industrial Revolution had a large impact on the development of our built and natural environment. Concerning the practice of architecture, some argue that the design process distanced itself from the actual production of architecture, gradually creating disconnect between form and technological innovation. However, the dynamics of the last decade have revealed a glimpse of change, opening new possibilities for the designer and maker to once again become one. The evermore availability of accessible innovation platforms and technologies, such as digital fabrication techniques, has catalysed an unprecedented potential to rapidly create and change the shape of our living environments. As we stand on the verge of this Third Industrial Revolution it is time to investigate its impact on our society, from the scale of products and interiors, to buildings and cities.
