The new 13.7-kilometer Kolkata East-West Metro is currently in construction underneath the densest sectors of Kolkata's city center. By providing convenient subway access through six new stations along the line and intermodal connectivity to the existing North-South Metro line and commuter/long distance rail lines, the completed project is expected to alleviate overtaxed bus service, reduce congestion, and stimulate economic development around the stations. The design approach highlights the integration of international design standards for transportation facilities with local cultural typologies. Join lead architects from Lee Harris Pomeroy Architects as they discuss their design response to the social, cultural, and economic context as well as physical challenges of realizing a new subway network in a mature but still growing Southeast Asian city. Speakers: Lee Harris Pomeroy, FAIA, Principal, Lee Harris Pomeroy Architects Antonio Figueroa, AIA, Associate Principal, Lee Harris Pomeroy Architects Joydeep Karmakar, Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Senior Associate, Lee Harris Pomeroy Architects Organized by: AIANY Cultural Facilities Committee and AIANY Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Price: Free for AIA members; $10 for non-members AIA CES: 1.5 LU | 1.5 HSW http://cfa.aiany.org/index.php?section=calendar&evtid=7940
