This year’s “On the Map” series turns a spotlight not on the end products of finished buildings, but on the processes by which design is achieved. The shoptalk events invite designers to reveal the methods of their architectural making and building, spanning a continuum from the high-tech digital on one end, to the analog and hand-crafted on the other. Exposing this range of activities, shoptalk invites you to tour the facilities where the magic happens and engage in the discussion about what it is that architects do.

Housing Construction Systems
The first event of shoptalk features RAC Design Build, a design firm with a portfolio of custom residential and adaptive re-use commercial projects for creative users. Blending the disciplines of architecture, construction, fabrication, and urban re-development, RAC promotes problem solving methods for their expanded view of what an architect’s studio can be.
RAC will host this installment of shoptalk at their Frogtown facility, a former electronics factory on the banks of the Los Angeles River. The complex of buildings was transformed into a multi-use office, steel fabrication shop and boneyard of salvaged building materials, becoming a new Community hub in the process. RAC will briefly talk about their practice and share their latest work; lead you on a tour of their office and well equipped workshop; and participate in a discussion and Q&A session on the subjects of design, the maker ethic and the tools of their trades.
