Lean project delivery has been discussed for years in the construction industry as a way to improve the design and construction of capital facilities but it has never really taken root. And yet, at the same time, Lean and Six Sigma manufacturing methodologies have caused a revolution in the delivery of products and services by many of the world’s best known companies, like Toyota, Motorola, GE, Honeywell, American Express, and even Starbucks now Benefiting from reduced costs, shorter schedules, higher profits and more engaged employees, these firms are fundamentally reinventing their business processes to deliver sustainable growth even in challenging times. Lean is not just a buzzword or catchphrase any more. With the advent of supporting technologies like Building Information Modeling, the maturity of Lean tools and processes, and a new imperative to drive out waste in the entire process, the real estate industry is taking a new look at Lean. Applied to design and construction, lean changes the mindset brought to how work is completed by encouraging collaborative planning, rigorous data collection and analysis, disciplined adherence to predictable outcomes, continuous improvement (Kaizen), and a “shop floor†approach that engages workers on the front lines in problem solving (Gemba). On November 10th learn how to minimize waste and maximize value and experience the “paradox†of Lean: lower costs and higher customer satisfaction.
