What are the challenges and the opportunities that women who choose either of these models face? How do these choices help establish, define and develop her professional identity and her career path? What is the significance of the family/work balance in the various models outlined? These are a few of the questions we will be examining through the filter of the above models described. WHO: SPEAKERS: Lise-Anne Couture Principal at Asymptote, Professor at the GSAPP, Columbia University Lise Anne Couture is a principal of Asymptote Architecture, the highly acclaimed New York-based practice that she co-founded with Hani Rashid in 1989. Through its award winning design projects and buildings, Asymptote has gained an international reputation for being at the forefront of design and technological innovation. Lise Anne Couture has held several prestigious academic positions including visiting professorships at Yale, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Cornell, and SCI-Arc. She is currently Professor in Practice at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. In 2004 Asymptote was chosen as the design architectural firm for the 9th International Venice Architecture Biennale. Lise Anne Couture and her partner Hani Rashid have been awarded the prestigious Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts in recognition of exceptional contributions to the progress and merging of art and architecture. They were named by TIME magazine as Leaders in Innovation for the 21st Century. Lise Anne Couture has been a New York Foundation of the Arts Fellow. She is a New York State Registered Architect and a member of the AIA. Hayes Slade Principal at Slade Architecture, Professor at Parsons In 2002, Hayes co-founded Slade Architecture and is a licensed architect in NY. In addition to the work at her practice, she teaches interior design at Parsons the New School for Design and serves as co-chair of the Interiors Committee of the NY chapter of the AIA. In 2010, Hayes was selected by the Architectural League of New York for the Emerging Voices program and she served as a juror for the program the following year. Hayes has also taught a design studio at Syracuse University School of Architecture and served on a variety of other design juries including AIA awards NJ Chapter and Electrolux Design Lab. Hayes brings an unusual, multi-faceted background to her design work. She has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in civil/structural engineering from Cornell University as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from the Wharton School of Business. Prior to Slade Architecture, Hayes worked at Arup in London and NYC, and Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in NYC as well as Boston Consulting Group. Hayes' design approach is informed by her experiences living and working in London and Rome as well as her time with other related endeavors: structural engineering, web-design/branding, jewelry design and strategy consulting. Susan T. Rodriguez, FAIA Founding Principal at ENNEAD Architects Susan T. Rodriguez is a founding Partner in Ennead Architects. Her award-winning portfolio, which includes projects for civic, cultural and educational institutions, has been recognized for design excellence, its contribution to the public realm and innovation in sustainability. Through her work she seeks to create an architecture fused with its surroundings and inspired by its program. Notable projects include Lyceé Français de New York, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Staten Island Courthouse and the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. As an extension of her professional work, Ms. Rodriguez actively promotes the importance of design in the public realm, serving on the boards of the Architectural League of New York and the Art Works Projects: Art + Design for Human Rights. Galia Solomonoff Principal Solomonoff Architecture Studio, Associate Professor at the GSAPP, Columbia University Galia Solomonoff is the founder and director of Solomonoff Architecture Studio. She received her Master in Architecture from Columbia University, and was awarded the McKim Prize for Excellence in Design. Prior to founding SAS, Solomonoff founded OpenOffice. She taught at Princeton, The Cooper Union, Yale, and currently at Columbia. Solomonoff is the recipient of several design awards, and art grants. Her work appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, W, ARTNews, Artforum, and Domus. New York Magazine called Dia: Beacon, which Solomonoff designed, “one of today’s most compelling museums,” and named Solomonoff part of the Next Wave of Designers in 2009. Solomonoff collaborated in several books including, Latin American Architecture: Six Voices, Post Ductility: Metals in Architecture and Engineering, and is working on Documenting Latin American Architecture a documentary and book project. Her writing aims at the recognition of Latin American Architecture’s cultural relevance. Winka Dubbeldam Principal Archi-Tectonics, Professor and Chair of the Grad. School of Arch. at PennDesign Winka Dubbeldam is the founder and president of Archi-Tectonics [1994] and Professor and Chair of the Graduate School of Architecture at PennDesign, Philadelphia. She has lectured and taught extensively at the Masters Programs of Columbia, Harvard, Cornell, and Penn. She served as juror at several design and AIA awards, and for the Prix de Rome and the Architecture Biennale in Bogota. She also serves as the External Examiner for the AA [Architectural Association], London, and has recently joined the Board of Directors of the Institute of Urban Design, NY [2010] and Board of Advisors of BOFFO NYC [2011]. Publications include the three Monographs, “Winka Dubbeldam, Architect” [010 Publishers, Rotterdam, 1996], AT-INdex [Princeton Press, NYC, 2006], and the Archi-Tectonics Monograph [DAAB publishers, 2010]. The work has also been published in a large number of International Architecture & Design Periodicals. Exhibitions include the MOMA exhibits, "The Unprivate House" (1999) and the PS1 ‘Young Architects’ exhibit (2001), the Max Protetch Exhibit for proposals for the WTC (2001), and two Venice Biennale exhibits [2002 & 2004]. Furthermore Archi-Tectonics curated and participated in the PAN exhibit in the Taylor Gallery [2006] and was included in Performalism, an exhibit in the Tel Aviv Museum of Modern Art [2008] and in ACADIA [NYC] in 2010. Winka received the “Emerging Voice” award [2001], and was awarded “Best and Brightest” by Esquire; the Genius Issue [2004]]. We were the Award winner in the IIDA / Metropolis Smart Environments Award [2006], won the Design Competition for a Sustainable Neighborhood Staten Island, NY [2008], the Hommes Award [2011] Rotterdam, and the 5.5 million s.f. Yulin Art District Design [2012] in China. MODERATOR: Jill N. Lerner, FAIA Principal at KPF, Former 2013 President of the AIANY With over 35 years of design and management experience and 19 years with Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, Jill Lerner has led the design of numerous award-winning academic and institutional research facilities projects for public and private clients throughout the United States and abroad. As a Principal at KPF, she is responsible for all aspects of project management and design, and is the primary client contact during all phases—from initial programming and conceptual design through construction and project close-out. Ms. Lerner leads KPF’s academic, medical and research practice, bringing extensive experience with educational facilities, many of them in dense, urban environments. Her work includes the NYU Colleges of Nursing, Dentistry and Bioengineering Institute as well as the recently completed Advanced Science Research Center at the City University of New York’s City College. Ms. Lerner has led master planning efforts for several academic and research facilities, including the China Academy of Sciences, University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business, the Walter B. Ford College for Creative Studies and the Semel Institute and Center for Health Sciences at the University of California-Los Angeles. Ms. Lerner is highly involved in professional events for women in the architecture industry and beyond. In 2013, she participated in “Leaning Out: Women in Global Practice” at the New York Center for Architecture, a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities that women in the industry encounter. She is an active member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women and was chair of the Building Committee on the board of the Asian University for Women. Ms. Lerner recently completed her term as President of the New York Chapter of American Institute of Architects (AIA). She was recently the only Architect on the Cornell University Board of Trustees (2004-2009), where she was on the Building and Properties Committee. She is a past Chair of the University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning Alumni Advisory Council. Jill also taught Professional Practice to architecture students in Cornell’s NYC program. about Global Dialogues ‘s (dis)covered Identities The AIA NY Global dialogues’ 2014 theme: (dis)covered Identities, aims to explore ways by which cultures, cities, and voices define or refine their identity through a global exchange of ideas and conversations covering multiple topics, perspectives and trends of our time.
