'Mackintosh's Contemporary' is an International symposium with the Leverhulme International Network for Contemporary Studies (LINCS) at the Glasgow School of Art, 1st September 2015. It will examine the question 'What is the Contemporary'? It will focus on three moments of the contemporary on the GSA campus: namely the Mackintosh Art School itself as a ‘contemporary’ rather than ‘modern’ building; the Reid building as a contemporary reworking of the original Mac; and the project for the contemporary rebuilding of the Mackintosh library. The symposium will feature talks and events presented by academics, architects, artists, filmmakers, conservationists, historians, writers and musicians. Architects, artists and conservationists involved in both the rebuilding of Mackintosh's Glasgow School of Art and the building of similar cutural institutions elsewhere in the world will be speaking at the event.Speakers are from Australia, China, England, France,Ireland and the USA as well as Scotland. A short film by Ross Birrell and Jo Crotch will be shown, and a site specific piece of music composed specially for the Reid building will be performed in promenade in and throughout the building itself.
