Materials & Applications: Building Something (Beyond) Beautiful, Projects 2002 - 2013

Sunday, Jan 26, 20147:55 AM — Monday, Apr 14, 20146:55 AMEDT

University Art Museum at CalState Long Beach - 1250 N Bellflower Blvd Los Angeles, CA | University Art Museum at CalState Long Beach - 1250 N Bellflower Blvd Los Angeles, CA

Opening Reception: 6-8 pm on Saturday, January 25th. Free and open to the public. Materials & Applications: Building Something (Beyond) Beautiful: projects, 2002-2013 is a survey of the last 11 years of landscape and architecture experiments at Materials & Applications. Spanning from the first groundbreaking party to the present (and beyond), models, prototypes, installation components, rare images and more reveal a multifaceted inquiry into the potential for new and underutilized approaches to transform the built environment. From the cutting edge of smart materials, robotics, & computational design; to the underutilized traditional materials of bamboo, felt, and pressure-formed plywood, a handful of the California's top young architects helped cement M&A as a hotbed for innovative ideas. With such radical concepts as a thermal bimetal passive cooling facade for buildings in Doris Sung's Bloom, and Edmund Ming-Yip Kwong's waste-reducing architectural framing system, Project S'More: small is more, their publicly workshopped construction and 24/7 display in M&A's semi-public court yard, dissolved the boundaries between laboratory, art gallery, and pocket park in a quest to bring community together and build something beyond beautiful. Exhibitors in the show include some of the most active names in California architecture: Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues Marcelo Spina (PATTERNS); Oyler Wu Collaborative (Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu) Jimenez Lai Rob Ley Doris Sung, with Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter and Matthew Melnyk Gail Peter Borden Layer (Lisa Little and Emily White) FoxLin (Michael Fox and Juintow Lin), NONDesigns (Scott Franklin and Miao Miao)and Brand Name Label (Gabriel Renz) Axel Kilian, and Darius Miller Jenna Didier with Ian Quezada and Daniel Ash Anja Franke, John Southern, and Nick Blake Edmund Ming-Yip Kwong Eddy Sykes Didier Hess with Workshop LEVITAS Francois Perrin Hours: Monday Closed Tuesday 12:00 - 5:00 pm Wednesday 12:00 - 5:00 pm Thursday 12:00 - 8:00 pm Friday 12:00 - 5:00 pm Saturday 12:00 - 5:00 pm Sunday 12:00 - 5:00 pm Materials & Applications: Building Something (Beyond) Beautiful, Projects 2002 - 2013 and MatterApp:Pyramidial activities have been organized by UAM Curator Kristina Newhouse. These projects have been awarded a 2013 Art Works: Design Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The construction of MA:P has been generously supported by Gossamer Space Frame and Krinner GmbH.
