Modular Culture: Architecture and the Art World's Great Franchise Experiment Wednesday, July 1, 6:30 pm As part of apexart's Franchise Project Joseph Grima will discuss the role of architecture and how it relates to the success story of franchising in the U.S., examining the standardized architectural prototypes of franchising alongside the typography of the "white cube" gallery space. He will also discuss the expansive growth of large-size modern and contemporary art museums, the architectural language generated by the franchising phenomenon, and its repercussions on the nature of the artwork collected and exhibited. Joseph Grima is a New York-based architect and writer. He is the current director of Storefront for Art and Architecture, a seminal gallery and events space in New York City devoted to the advancement of innovative positions in architecture, art and design. He is the author of Instant Asia (Skira, 2007), a critical overview of the recent work of young and emerging architecture practices across the Asian continent, co-editor of Shift (Lars Mueller, 2008), and has contributed to numerous books, magazines and publications.
