With its fifth biennial competition and exhibition, the New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter is proud to recognize six emerging architecture and design firms working in New York City. These firms will be featured in an exhibition opening on October 1 at 6pm at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place. This year the opening of New Practices New York 2014 will also kick off Archtober 2014, Architecture and Design Month. “Having Archtober open with the New Practices New York 2014 exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for these young firms to get exposure to a larger audience,” says Cynthia Kracauer, AIA, Archtober Festival Director. A roundtable discussion will precede the exhibition opening. On October 1 from 5-6pm, Beatrice Galilee, curator of architecture and design at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will moderate a conversation with members of the winning firms. THE EXHIBITION October 1, 2014 – January 17, 2015 Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York City New Practices New York 2014 will showcase the work of: The Bittertang Farm (http://bittertang.com/) dlandstudio architecture + landscape (http://www.dlandstudio.com/) Fake Industries Architectural Agonism (http://www.fakeindustries.org/) form-ula (http://www.form-ula.com/) NAMELESS Architecture (http://namelessarchitecture.com/) PARA-Project (http://www.para-project.org/) The six winners have created floor-to-ceiling installations that play with the ideas of structure, reflection, and transparency, designed specifically for the Center for Architecture’s double-height storefront window. Other exhibition materials will include models, project images, renderings, and videos. Pentagram/Natasha Jen, the exhibition designer, has created a custom font for New Practices New York 2014 that will be used throughout the exhibition to highlight the firm’s design philosophies. The winners of this year's New Practices New York competition represent the diversity and talent that makes up the community of emerging design practices in New York City. These firms demonstrate a persistent and critical engagement with the environmental, social, and technological issues that shape our contemporary culture. AIA, AIANY New Practices Committee Co-Chairs. THE COMPETITION Six promising new architecture and design firms working in New York were chosen as the New Practices New York 2014 competition winners. To qualify for the competition, practices had to be founded after 2004 and be located within New York City’s five boroughs. The competition is open to multidisciplinary firms, widening the field of entrants to include designers and young professionals in the process of becoming licensed architects. The distinguished panel of jurors who selected the competition’s winners from 64 entries were: Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Architect, AZPA, Dean, and Architectural Design, Princeton University Elaine Molinar, AIA, Director Strategic Planning and Business Development, Snøhetta Jing Liu, Principal, SO-IL Lucia Allais, Assistant Professor, History and Theory of Architecture, Princeton University William Menking, Editor-in-Chief, The Architect’s Newspaper, and Professor, Pratt Institute AIANY promotes the next generation of design leaders “The six firms demonstrate the vibrancy of our city’s young and emerging architecture and urban design community, giving us insights into what we can expect from our future architecture and design leaders,” said AIANY 2014 President Lance Jay Brown, FAIA. “We look forward to seeing how our creative and innovative architects and urban designers take advantage of the many opportunities afforded by the new challenges facing our evolving environment and our recentralizing cities.” While the AIA New York Chapter, with more than 5,000 members, is the oldest and largest chapter of an 83,000 member national organization, our commitment to support and promote young and emerging talent is expressed through this fifth iteration of the biennial New Practices competition. Through a collegial exchange with other countries, AIANY’s New Practices competition program has exhibited winners in London (2007), San Francisco (2009), and São Paulo (2011). Those cities have also brought their works to New York. AIANY New Practices work has also been shown at Berlin’s Deutsches Architektur Zentrum (DAZ) and in San Antonio at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center during the 2007 AIA National Convention. In 2013 and 2014, the AIANY New Practices Committee organized a two-part symposium, “(P)RE:THINK | Competitive Ideas” to debate how the culture ideas competition can translate into more productive models for the development and dissemination of architectural ideas. ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION Thursday, October 1, 5-6pm The winners of the New Practices New York 2014 competition will make brief presentations of their work followed by a discussion moderated by Beatrice Galilee, curator of architecture and design at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition opening will also kick off Archtober 2014, Architecture and Design Month. The Archtober Lounge, designed by Pentagram’s Luke Hayman, will also open on October 1, 2014. The opening is free and open to the public. LECTURE SERIES Since the winner’s announcement, four of the six firms have presented solo lectures at the Häfele Showroom. Two final lectures by NAMELESS Architecture and form-ula will take place on October 16 and November 12 from 6-8pm.
