New York Perspectives on Resilience Nancy Kete, Thaddeus Pawlowski, and Marc Ricks Moderated by Alexandros Washburn 1.5 HSW AIA and New York State CEUs This lecture is organized by The Museum of the City of New York and co-sponsored by The Architectural League and The American Society of Landscape Architects. One year ago, Superstorm Sandy devastated New York neighborhoods and changed life in the city in profound ways. How can New Yorkers begin to align their politics, finances, and designs to reduce the risk from future storms? Alexandros Washburn, author of The Nature of Urban Design: A New York Perspective on Resilience and New York’s chief urban designer, will lead a discussion with three people at the forefront of both thought and action to make New York more resilient: Marc Ricks, a former chief of staff to Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff, who left the private sector to return to the Bloomberg Administration to help lead the Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency; architect Thaddeus Pawlowksi, who began his career creating computer models of hurricane strikes and has recently worked at New York’s Housing Recovery Office; and Nancy Kete, who develops strategies and practices for infusing resilience thinking throughout the work of the Rockefeller Foundation, where she is the Managing Director. The program is presented in conjunction with Rising Waters: Photographs of Hurricane Sandy, running at the Museum of the City of New York from October 29 to February 10, 2014.
