Julia Morgan, FAIA (1872–1957), who was posthumously awarded the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 2014, had an unprecedented career as the first woman to study architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the first to be licensed to practice it in the state of California. Morgan’s body of work comprises over 700 buildings, including two National Historic Landmarks in California: the Hearst San Simeon Estate and the Asilomar Conference Grounds.
