Project Architecture: Creative Practice in the Time of Global

Tuesday, Sep 14, 20104 AMEDT

Institute of Philosophy, ZRC-SAZU, Ljubljana Ljubljana, Slovenia | Institute of Philosophy, ZRC-SAZU, Ljubljana Ljubljana, Slovenia

Publication: The Museum of Architecture and Design is pleased to announce the publication of the latest addition to their scholarly publications series: Project Architecture: Creative Practice in the Time of Global Capitalism. Premise:  As a result of the globalisation processes of recent years our environment has been changed in radical ways. These processes have also had a significant impact on architecture. Examining contemporary architectural production in the context of these changes affords an opportunity to stress the critical, even transformative ability of architecture. And it may indicate a way forward, according to which architecture can still be practiced today – not as a commodity, nor as a service, but as architecture; or more precisely, as a creative practice. Project: Project Architecture offers a critical and richly evocative discussion of architecture as a creative practice in crisis. Here all of the distinguished contributors – guest lecturers at the prestigious Project Architecture conference of May 2009 in Ljubljana – succeed in articulating the issues according to their own unique formulation and singular verbal craft. Design, William Saunders (Harvard Design Magazine) poignantly offers, is in a state of distraction. Pier Vittorio Aureli (Berlage Institute) explores the possibilities of confrontation and inhabitable space. Luis Fernández-Galiano (AV/Arquitectura Viva) calls for a renewal of the social pact of modern architecture. Kenneth Frampton (Columbia University) points with poetic optimism to viable strategies with which to resist the reduction of the man-made world. Similarly, Petra Čeferin (Zavod ARK) offers a tenacious and finely formulated ‘affirmative resistance’. And Rado Riha (Institute of Philosophy, ZRC-SAZU) dextrously re-formulates the famous Robespierre's question – “Citizens, would you want a revolution without a revolution?” – to become “Architects, would you want architecture without architecture? Launch: The publication of Project Architecture will be launched with an evening event, Sept. 13, 2010, at 19:00 at ZRC-Sazu Znanstvenoraziskovalni center, Novi trg 2, Ljubljana, together with editors Jeff Bickert, Petra Čeferin and Cvetka Požar, and guests Tadej Glazar, Peter Krečič and Rado Riha. Copies: Review copies of the book are available in advance, from the Museum of Architecture and Design; and at the launch, Sept. 13, 2010. The editors and some contributors will also be available for commentary and discussion, both in advance and at the launch. Project Architecture: Creative Practice in the Time of Global Capitalism (Jeff Bickert, Petra Čeferin, Cvetka Požar, Editors) is available in English- and Slovenian-language editions; 136 pages, colour illustrations.
