Cities+March event Join us at 7:30 on March 11 at Brooklyn bar the Way Station for the second installment of our Cities+ speaker series. For this round, presenters will include: Engineer Tom Wilcock, head of the Advanced Technology and Research group in the New York office of global design firm Arup. His team applies sophisticated numerical models to understand structural interactions between the built environment, nature, and people. Emily-Bell Dinan, cofounder of Roger That Garden Project. A community garden experiment that began eight years ago on a vacant Crown Heights lot, Roger That now houses hundreds of native plants and provides space for local residents to garden and harvest food from communally cultivated plots. Since discovering that the lot was purchased by a developer in late 2013, Dinan and many others have been fighting to save the green space. Nick Collins, who has been involved with the Greene Hill Food Co-op since it was originally proposed in 2009, joining the board of directors in 2012. He has focused primarily on developing member services and in-store operations, with a particular emphasis on providing access to healthy, affordable food for all neighborhood residents. Doreen Adengo, who teaches architecture at the Pratt Institute and heads Adengo Architects. For the past few years, she has been researching the architecture of her hometown, Ugandan capital Kampala. (Held over from our January event.) plus Two distinct Brooklyn musical voices, Kenny Warren (trumpet) and Jeremiah Lockwood (guitar), play their own lively take on American roots, blues, and country music. Featuring new and old songs inspired by Lead Belly, The Carter Family, and Ornette Coleman. The Way Station is located at 683 Washington Avenue between Prospect and St. Marks in Prospect Heights. The event will run from 7:30 to 9PM. Admission is free, but donations are suggested.
