SIMULATION LAB: Dynamic Systems with Processing

Saturday, Oct 20, 20125 PM — Monday, Oct 22, 20121 AMEDT

1205 Manhattan Avenue Brooklyn, NY | 1205 Manhattan Avenue Brooklyn, NY

SIMULATION LAB: Dynamic Systems with Processing | 2012 October 20-21 Overview: SIMULATION LAB is a two-day workshop on the topic of Simulation with Processing. In a fast-paced and hands-on learning environment, we will cover technical programming concepts such as Syntax, Control, and Modularity. Utilizing a suite of libraries to extend Processing’s functionality, we will explore and incrementally develop Force-Based, Physics-Based, and Agent-Based Simulations. Additionally, we will examine methods for visualizing the dynamic nature, unexpected tendencies, and behavioral effects present in our Simulations. Framework: Lab participants will learn the Fundamental Programming Concepts for writing code in Processing as well as techniques necessary for creating, interfacing with, and capturing dynamic Simulations. The Lab curriculum will include a series of instructional lectures, lab exercises, and open work sessions. Instructional lectures will serve to both introduce key concepts and spark discussion amongst the group. Modeled after carefully selected case-studies, lab exercises are designed to make abstract technical concepts concrete and applicable to creative professionals. Open work sessions will offer participants time to develop individual design studies with one-on-one assistance by the Lab instructors. In the SIMULATION LAB, participants will also be introduced to strategies that incorporate external Libraries which extend Processing’s native functionality and provide additional methods to explore multiple strategies for Simulation. Participants from all creative fields and backgrounds are encouraged to attend and lend their perspective to the Lab. As part of a larger online infrastructure, modeLab, this workshop provides participants with continued support and knowledge to draw upon for future learning.
