Professor John Shapiro is Chair of the Graduate Center for Planning & the Environment at Pratt Institute, and coordinates the Programs for Sustainable Planning & Development – an alliance of four separate programs addressing urbanism: planning, preservation, sustainability, and real estate. John joined Pratt after over 30 years in consulting, including 25 years as the principal of one of the region’s largest and most accomplished planning consultancies. John’s areas of specialization are comprehensive planning and policy, economic development, waterfront, neighborhood vitalization, and planning as an arbitration tool. John has served on a large number of civic and academic boards and committees, and is a past president of the NY Metro Chapter of the American Planning Association, which won a national award during his tenure. In total, John and his work have received approximately twenty awards, also including the nation’s top planning award in 1996 for the Comprehensive Community Revitalization Program in the South Bronx.
