Time: 6:30 p.m. Join Leroy Street Studio and Hester Street Collaborative at their offices for drinks, informal conversation, and a behind the scenes look at recent and upcoming projects. This program is part of First Friday, a monthly opportunity for League members to visit the offices of leading design practices to see work on the boards and learn more about the offices’ organization and design processes. These informal social gatherings feature happy hour drinks arranged by the host office. Founded in 1995, Leroy Street Studio (LSS) has developed a horizontal practice, focused on architecture, construction management, community design-build work, and interior design. Inspired by an interest in how things are made, LSS has expanded its portfolio from residential architecture to include public and community projects. LSS established BLDG, Inc. in 2008, a construction management company, to foster experimentation in the architectural process, and to assume greater responsibility for project delivery—from project conception through detailing and construction. Recent projects by LSS include Cove House in Massachusetts; Hill House on Shelter Island, NY; and Triple Townhouse in New York. The firm has been selected for both the New York City Parks Department and Department of Design + Construction Excellence Programs, and is currently working on a new Environmental Center at Alley Pond Park in Queens. In 2001, LSS founded Hester Street Collaborative (HSC), a community workshop, to work with community groups in, their words, “the Lower East Side backyard laboratory.” HSC has become a leader in the field of public interest design, with an approach that enables community members to participate in envisioning, designing, and building elements to transform their neighborhoods. HSC has recently helped secure funding for the East River Park master planning process and launched the annual Paths to Pier 42 project which, in collaboration with local artists and residents, transforms a derelict section of waterfront into a pop-up park. Other projects include a Mobile Cooking Classroom for East Harlem and the South Bronx with SMART and a design and feasibility plan for the Queensway. First Friday events are free and open only to League members, who may bring one non-member guest. RSVP required to {encode="[email protected]" title="[email protected]"}.
